About Ives Hardware Products

We get many calls each day with questions about Ives products. Below are answers to many of some questions:

1. Explain model numbers.
Most model numbers consist of 3 components:

A) Product model
B) Base metal
C) Finish

The model and finish are self-explanatory, but the base metal causes much confusion.

In short, most products are either cast in brass or in aluminum. Brass products are much heavier and work very well with the finishing process. Aluminum products are lighter and do not finish well.

It would be easy to tell the difference between the two base metals if you could hold a sample product of each metal in your hands. The brass version would weigh 4 or 5 times as much as the aluminum version. The finish on the brass would look very high quality while the aluminum version is not much to look at.

Aluminum versions typically cost 1/3 - 1/5 the price of a brass version.

In the example at right, both models represent a handrail bracket with a US3 Polished Brass finish.

2. What about factory orders?
We can fill non-stock orders normally in 10 working days.

The factory is very good to work with and consitently ships on time. On occasion, there will be delays for unusual finishes or products rarely ordered.

We can drop ship right to you from the factory to reduce lead time to you.

There are minimum factory order levels and the level depends upon product type. We cannot special order just a couple of items for you.

3. What are the different strike types?
This one is very tricky.

In the past year, Ives has swapped the names of some of their strikes. Always check our Data Sheets as they show current strike pictures and names.

In general, a mortise strike is one that would require mortising to mount. This would be done with a router or a chisel. Universal strikes and angle strikes are typically surface mounted.

4. What shipping types are available?
We offer all the standard shipping styles offered by UPS and FedEx. These include everything from Ground to Next Day Air.

Most orders will ship ground and we typically have several warehouse locations to choose from. We can most products to arrive in 2 working days to anywhere in the U.S.
